Considerations when choosing a carry gun
Reliability
I think this should be probably the number one factor when making a choice to legally carry a gun. This device is for life saving and it needs to work when you call upon it. In my personal order of operations this is the most important all else can be considered supplemental.
Caliber
There are many debates on caliber. What caliber I choose may not work for another. I suggest a serviceable caliber such as 9mm, .45 ACP, or .40 S&W. Purely a suggestion and not a be all end all statement. Just understand the limitations of what caliber you choose and . Having said that having a .22 LR in hand is better than a .45 ACP in your nightstand.
Capacity
Debates are plenty on this. More is better many will say. There is always the other side that states “If you can’t get it done in 5 shots what makes you think you will get it done in 6”. I personally think more is better. But it is up to the individual to make that choice and the gun you carry with 6 shots is better than the one you do not carry that has 15.
Size and concealability
Know that larger or full size guns are generally easier to shoot but can be more difficult to conceal and smaller guns are usually easier to conceal but can be more difficult to shoot. You will need to decide what factor you value most concealability or ease of use. Often you will have to make a compromise or mixture of both.
Closing
Whatever you choose, know that carrying it outweighs you not carrying it regardless of size, caliber, or capacity. Be sure to practice with your gun of choice often so you understand both your and its limitations.
